Guam Transportation Program to implement island-wide striping and marking on Route 1

As part of the Island-Wide Safety Improvements Project funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the Department of Public Works will implement safety enhancements along Dead Man’s Curve in Asan.
This notoriously hazardous section of Route 1, located just south of Adelup, has been the site of numerous crashes, including several fatalities. With a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour in this area, additional traffic control measures are necessary to help reduce the risk of serious accidents.
Ongoing road improvements began in early March at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 11.
Safety enhancements specific to Dead Man’s Curve are expected to begin in April and will include the installation of rumble stripes, optical speed bars, narrowed travel lanes, a flushed median, and wider edge pavement markings along the 2,200-foot stretch.
Permanent signage to be installed includes:
- Two yellow diamond "Slow Down" signs
- Two diamond "Narrow Lane" signs
- A reverse curve sign with an advisory speed plaque
- Chevron markings outside of the curves
- Two "Trucks Stay Right" signs
With support from the Office of Highway Safety and the Guam Police Department, speed trailers may be deployed before and after construction to collect data and assess the effectiveness of these improvements. The data will help guide any future safety measures if necessary.
DPW urges all motorists to exercise caution in the area and follow traffic control measures during construction.
Once the project is completed, drivers are strongly encouraged to observe posted speed limits to reduce crashes and improve safety along this dangerous stretch of road.
