What began as a routine walk home from Anthony’s Auto Shop last Friday turned into a frightening discovery for Tony Koiwa, a decomposing body spotted along his usual route through Anigua.

“I just got off from work and was heading home–and I usually take that route every day. At a distance, it looked like a trash bag…As I got closer, I saw the legs, so I just turned around and called 911,” said Koiwa.

Shaken, Koiwa said he had taken that same path earlier in the day, a trail that winds to the beach area behind the Lime Event Venue.

“He wasn’t there that morning–and I was just surprised to see him on the beach in broad daylight,” said Koiwa.

Detectives from the Guam Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene at around 5:24 p.m. that day, cordoning off the area and searching for clues.

The body was later removed by the Chief Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.

“It’s the last thing anyone would ever want to come across. It’s unfortunate–You know? Hopefully, he’s gone from natural causes. What can I say? I’m sorry for the guy,” added Koiwa.

And while the victim’s identity and cause of death remain under investigation, Koiwa is sending condolences to the victim’s family, as questions loom over whether foul play was involved.

“We have our vagrants here in Anigua–but I think this is the first time we’ve run into that–so it’s a shocker,” said Koiwa.
