Eyewitness recalls armed carjacking of 18-year-old in Windward Hills

The search in Talo'fo'fo continued well into the evening and even past sunrise Sunday.
The suspect, who attempted to steal at least two cars before fleeing, apparently made another attempt in Windward Hills before taking police on a high speed chase north.
Residents at Windward Hills Apartment in Yona are still shaken up over the events of the weekend. This is where Jeromy Pangelinan car jacked a vehicle from an 18-year-old resident at gun point.
A tenant told KUAM he was on the second floor when he witnessed someone trying to steal his cousin’s car in the parking lot just outside his door.
“At first I was up here on the balcony just watching over like, ‘what the [expletive] is going on. I’ve never seen that before.’ I saw the whole thing happen, I was like, ‘holy [expletive].’ That’s when I ran down stairs,” said the tenant.
At the time, he didn’t know it was Pangelinan, who was on the run from authorities after shooting and attempting to carjack others in Talo’fo’fo.
“He had a silver revolver. That’s what I recall. It was kind of crazy,” the tenant added.
He said the suspect demanded his cousin’s keys and threatened to shoot him.
“So my cousin just gave him the keys. Then that was it and he started running away for his safety,” said the tenant.
It’s a terrifying moment for what he calls a relatively normal and peaceful neighborhood.
Plus, he believes Pangelinan was able to evade authorities by hiding out beneath the stairs of the apartment.
“I didn’t expect him to be here. I did have a feeling he was under the stairs, because there was a table that was moved in a certain way. Maybe that’s where he was hiding the night before,” they said.
He said police brought K-9’s to sniff out the area Monday morning.
He also shows us a fresh trail in the jungle behind the apartments.
“Like someone just made it. So I feel like that was him, he went through the jungle and came over here. And he waited for the right time,” they said.
Still, the Yona family is doing okay and just trying to move forward.
“Hopefully my cousin will get a new car from wherever, because that guy [expletive] wrecked it,” they said.
Meantime, this carjacking is ultimately what gave police the break they needed in their overnight manhunt for Pangelinan and led to his arrest.
