Bank of Guam awards $157K in grants to GUMA and Hagåtña Barrio Project through FHLB Des Moines partnership

Two local organizations are receiving a major boost—thanks to a powerful partnership between Bank of Guam and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.
Through the Member Impact Fund, over $157,000 in matching grants will support Guam Unique Merchandise and Art—also known as GUMA—and the Hagåtña Barrio Project.
GUMA will receive $125,000 to expand job training, mentorship, and small business support, helping local entrepreneurs turn passion into economic progress.
Meanwhile, the Hagåtña Barrio Project will receive over $32,000 for cultural preservation and revitalization efforts in Guam’s historic capital.
Bank of Guam CEO Joaquin Cook says the initiative reflects the Bank’s founding vision—investing in people, culture, and a stronger future for Guam.
The grant program, powered by FHLB Des Moines, supports community development and affordable housing across Hawaii, Utah, and Guam.
For GUMA Executive Director Monica Guzman, the support bridges the gap between creativity and sustainable business and for the Hagåtña Restoration and Redevelopment Authority, it’s a step toward reimagining the capital city while preserving its historic heart.
Together, these grants are building economic resilience, strengthening cultural identity, and empowering Guam’s next generation.
