Tax deadline looms, last minute tips for late filers

A busy day at the Guam Department of Revenue and Taxation on Monday.
“Today is certainly a lot busier than we saw last week, but that’s to be expected. The parking lot is full,” said DPR’s Spokesperson, Carlina Charfauros.
The April 15th deadline to file taxes is just around the corner but these employees are prepared to take the heat with Tuesday's influx.
“As you can see out here, we’ve erected additional outflow canopies that’s able to receive more folks and provide more services out here so they don’t necessarily have to go inside the building,” said Charfauros.
Charfauros said different branches and divisions are lending support staff.
“The staff are really great and they know what to do. It’s all hands on deck. We’re happy to be here and get everyone out of here as quickly as we can,” she added.
Tax filer Thomas Hertslat from Barrigada breezed through as he filed an extension.
“It’s very well organized today despite the fact that thousands of people are coming in and as usual we are a little late in doing our filings,” said Hertslat.
To make it a quick and easy process Tuesday, here are some reminders.
Be prepared, make sure you have all your documents on hand, verify all your information and most importantly, make sure the return is signed.
“They want to make sure the applications are filled out properly and the signature is there. If there’s multiple or two signatures needed on the filing, have both signatures,” said Charfauros.
Make sure your W2 and 1099 are attached to the form itself and if you’re not ready to file by April 15th, make sure to file an extension to avoid paying a penalty.
You can file it online on myguamtax.com or paper file in person, through their drop box or mail it in and if you do owe, have your payment ready.
“Out here we are having cashier checks and money orders. Inside we are receiving cash and credit cards, as well as the options that are available out here. We want to remind folks that checks should be issued to the Treasurer of Guam,” added Charfauros.
But the most important reminder, Charfauros said, “Just to have patience and bear with us so we can get you out of here as quickly as possible.”
All to make sure the Tuesday deadline isn’t taxing.
