Governor discusses healthcare, housing, and utilities with visiting CODEL

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero met with a high-level Congressional Delegation Wednesday afternoon following their tour of Guam’s military bases, where they discussed the island’s strategic importance, energy resilience, and urgent civilian infrastructure needs, including healthcare, housing, and utilities.
The delegation included the House Appropriations Committee Defense Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Ken Calvert, Rep. Steve Womack, Rep. Ed Case, and House Appropriations Committee MILCON Subcommittee member Rep. John Rutherford, along with senior staff and Department of Defense liaisons.
During the meeting, Governor Leon Guerrero urged stronger federal investment in Guam’s public infrastructure. She emphasized that while the island continues to deliver on national defense, it needs critical support to meet growing healthcare demands.
“We’ve already committed $104 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds towards building our new hospital, and we are exploring CDBG-DR, bond financing, and other grants,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “But to get this hospital built, we need federal partners at the table.”
CODEL members expressed their understanding of these needs and provided assurances that Guam must be prepared for any emerging threats in the region.
They also showed interest in improving Guam’s power supply and discussed ways the federal government could assist in strengthening energy systems.
The delegation also expressed the urgency of supporting Guam's critical infrastructure needs and will be working closely with the Governor’s administration and Guam’s delegate.
