What caused a patient to fall to her death at the Guam Memorial Hospital shortly after she was discharged from the emergency room?

That question still remains unanswered more than a month since the body of 58-year-old Rita Perez was discovered in the hospital courtyard.

As we reported, the Mangilao resident fell three floors inside the hospital, landing in the courtyard on March 15.

The Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kenny Su confirmed with KUAM that the manner of death, at least on his end, is “consistent with falling.”

He adds the toxicology report is still pending and will be out in about two weeks.

The CME added, “The difficult part is the investigation for the circumstances, which belongs to GPD.”

Meantime, GMH Administrator and CEO Lillian Perez-Posadas said the public hospital has changed their policy in the emergency room.

Moving forward, she says patients that are discharged from the ER will not be left alone.

“We have put in place that going forward, no one from the emergency room with certain criteria that our emergency room staff will not leave that patient unattended even though that patient has been discharged out of our responsibility. As long as they are within our premises, especially inside, they will not be left unattended until the patient is picked up by the family,” said Posadas.

As reported, Perez's sister contends “her pain was not assessed properly and they took it lightly…if they had kept her overnight and assessed her pain maybe she’d be alive today.”

For now, family and loved ones have already laid Perez to rest and police continue to remain mum as they wait for the toxicology report from the CME’s office.
