A Guam voyager is making history, reviving an ancient ocean route between Micronesia and Taiwan.
Guam Canoe Builder and Navigator Ron Acfalle has embarked on a historic 15-day voyage from Palau to Taiwan, joining Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur aboard the 56-foot traditional sailing canoe "Alingano Maisu."
The double-hulled canoe, a gift to legendary wayfinder “Papa Mau” in 2007, set sail on April 20 as part of a cultural partnership with the Taitung City government of Taiwan.
Acfalle’s involvement marks a milestone for Guam’s seafaring revival. He said the voyage will “galvanize the Marianas’ voyaging community” and reconnect modern navigators with ancestral sea lanes last charted over 3,500 years ago.
Before departing, he received blessings from Guam's CHamoru and Carolinian elders for a safe journey.
