With hotter months ahead as summer begins, the Guam Power Authority is taking urgent steps to secure additional energy as demand spikes across the island. The Consolidated Commission on Utilities has approved a resolution authorizing GPA to request extra energy support from the Ukudu Power Plant during its commissioning activities between the peak summer period of May 1 to August 24.

This move is expected to save around $5.1 million in fuel costs under the Levelized Energy Adjustment Clause. On April 21, power demand surged to 259 megawatts - the highest since 2023's Typhoon Mawar.  With key units down for maintenance and the heat index rising, GPA is warning of possible loadshedding and is urging residents to conserve power, especially between 5pm and 11pm.

GPA officials say the next few weeks will be tough, but by working together, Guam can avoid outages and build a more resilient grid.
