Guam is set to take center stage in the world of jiu-jitsu with the upcoming Copa de Marianas, kicking off a global tour showcasing local talent.

The Copa de Marianas, scheduled for Jan. 25 at the Calvo Field House, marks the start of an extraordinary jiu-jitsu series under the renowned Marianas Open banner.

Following this opening event, the series will head to Japan with the Marianas Pro tournaments in Tokyo and Nagoya. 

Steve Shimizu, President and Founder of the Marianas Open, has been promoting the series in Japan to build excitement in the international jiu-jitsu community.

Winners at the Copa will earn the chance to compete in Japan.

These categories include:  

  • Kids Team: 2 first-place winners, 1 second-place winner  
  • Adult Team: 2 first-place adults, 1 second-place adult  

Absolute Divisions:

  • 1st Place Female Purple Belt  
  • 1st Place Male Purple Belt  
  • 1st Place Male Blue Belt  
  • 1st Place Female Blue Belt  
  • 1st Place Male Brown Belt  
  • 1st Place Female Brown Belt  
  • 1st Place Female Black Belt  
  • 1st Place Male Black Belt  

The global tour will culminate on Guam this fall, following stops in various countries across Asia, where champions from each event will compete for a total cash prize pool of up to $50,000.  

The Marianas Open has a proven track record of driving significant economic and cultural impact, having brought nearly 1,500 visitors to Guam last year. 

This year, the expanded series aims to double that number, transforming Guam into an epicenter of athletic excellence and cultural diplomacy.  

Competitors and spectators alike are encouraged to participate in this world-class event, which combines the artistry of Jiu-Jitsu with Guam’s renowned Håfa Adai spirit.
