New community gym projects are moving forward following site visits and preliminary work by government officials.

Acting Governor Josh Tenorio, Humåtak Mayor Johnny Quinata, and Department of Public Works officials conducted a site visit in Humåtak to begin preliminary preparation for a new open-air gymnasium.

The Humåtak Project is one of five open-air gymnasiums funded through the land and water conservation fund. The site is located next to the Humåtak fire station, where DPW engineers began plotting construction markers.

The Humåtak Gymnasium Project is supported by a $1.28 million dollar LWCF grant secured by the Guam state clearinghouse. The facility will include a covered open-air gym, multi-purpose regulation-size courts for basketball and volleyball, a micro skatepark, and restroom facilities.

In addition to Humåtak, LWCF funding has also been secured for four other new open-air gymnasiums located in Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Assan-Ma’ina, Piti, and Inalåhan.

The five new gym projects total more than $5 million and are in addition to more than $15 million in recreational facility investments already made across Guam.

Tenorio said the new gyms are intended to serve as centers of village life, support healthy lifestyles, and provide safe spaces for communities to gather.
