For most people, the goal is to just make it to retirement age, but many do not consider what happens after, how do people who are at that age continue to enjoy retirement, but also make their money continue to work for them. A two-day conference aimed to help guide our seniors to becoming more financially literate recently happened.

Raymond James, a financial services firm, provided our island's seniors with information geared towards long-term financial stability through their 2nd Annual Micronesia and Retirement Plan Conference.

The goal of the conference was to inform participants that retirement is more of a transition, rather than an endpoint. With the transition involving utilizing a person's assets, income sources, and net worth built during their working career.

Raymond James managing director Jason Miyashita, in an interview with KUAM, says the conference went over several topics from investments, to lending, to retirement services, to charitable spending and planning, as well as technology.

"When we're looking at it as a whole there's multiple areas that we need to cover. Not only on the investment side, but also planning for not only retirement but also through retirement. Because retirement really, many people have the old idea you retire at 65 and you go away and you enjoy the sunset," he explained.

"But now we are all living longer. We're talking 20-30 years and even 40 years now as healthcare is improving we're taking care of our bodies. So now we actually have to plan for a much longer time horizon in investments and keeping up to date with your retirement plans, your 401(k), your pension, and also your investment plans very important to prolong that life of your investment. Because at the end of the day the worst thing that can happen is that you run out of money."
